Die Grand Theft Auto-Reihe wird von Rockstar Gaming entwickelt und vertrieben. Laut der offiziellen Rockstar-Spieleliste gibt es im August 2014 fünfzehn Spiele in der Serie.
Grand Theft Auto wurde ursprünglich 1997 von der schottischen Firma DMA Gaming für den PC veröffentlicht. DMA Gaming hat sich seitdem zu Rockstar Gaming entwickelt und die Serie, die für Dutzende von Videospielkonsolen erhältlich ist, erheblich erweitert.
