Die Schüttdichte von Kohle hängt von der jeweiligen Kohlesorte ab. Es kann zwischen 40 und 58 Pfund pro Kubikfuß oder 641 bis 929 Kilogramm pro Kubikmeter liegen.
Die drei Kohlearten sind Anthrazitkohle, Steinkohle und Braunkohle. Anthrazitkohle hat eine Schüttdichte von 50 bis 58 Pfund pro Kubikfuß oder 800 bis 929 Kilogramm pro Kubikmeter. Es ist eine reife Kohle und ist sehr hart und glänzend. Bituminöse Kohle hat eine Schüttdichte von 42 bis 57 Pfund pro Kubikfuß oder 673 bis 913 Kilogramm pro Kubikmeter. Es entzündet sich leicht und brennt lange mit einer relativ langen Flamme. Braunkohle hat eine Schüttdichte von 40 bis 54 Pfund pro Kubikfuß oder 641 bis 865 Kilogramm pro Kubikmeter. Sie gilt als unreife Kohle, hat eine etwas helle Farbe und bleibt weich.
